Inspiring the Next Generation: BBH’s Mentoring Scheme Expands
At BBH, we believe in nurturing the future of the profession – and our mentoring scheme is doing just that. Launched in partnership with the University of Hertfordshire during the 2023–24 academic year, the initiative pairs accountancy students with local firms to provide valuable real-world insight and career guidance.
Following the scheme’s strong success, plans are already underway to expand the programme in the 2025–26 academic year, both in terms of participating firms and student numbers – including an exciting extension to students from the University of Bedfordshire.
Tailored Mentoring That Makes a Difference
Each student is matched with a participating firm, where a personalised mentoring plan is developed based on their individual needs and career aspirations. From understanding the dynamics of a professional workplace to building confidence in interviews, the mentoring process opens up conversations around soft skills, workplace expectations, and the broad spectrum of careers that a qualification in accountancy can lead to.
Mentors, often recently qualified team members, are perfectly placed to share relatable experiences. This near-peer dynamic has proven to be a great asset—offering students authentic insights while also giving younger professionals within firms the chance to develop mentoring and communication skills of their own.
What Participants Are Saying
The feedback has been overwhelmingly positive. Students report that the mentoring experience has helped boost their self-confidence, enhanced their interview techniques, and encouraged them to pursue careers in accountancy with renewed enthusiasm.
Mentors, too, have found the experience deeply rewarding. Many speak of the satisfaction they’ve felt watching their mentees grow in confidence and clarity over the course of the programme. The scheme also fosters a richer exchange of ideas and perspectives—offering mentors exposure to diverse cultural and social backgrounds that extend beyond their typical professional circles.
Help Shape the Future of the Profession
As we grow the scheme for the next academic year, we are actively seeking more firms to get involved. Whether you’re a small practice or a larger firm, mentoring is a fantastic way to give back, invest in the profession’s future, and develop your team’s leadership skills in the process.
